We are on the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God,” says Jesus in today’s Gospel. He is responding to the question of conniving Chief Priests and Herodians: “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?”

They would like Jesus to take a side, which either way would incriminate him as an enemy of Rome or a transgressor of Jewish customs. His answer was direct: Repay to Caesar what belongs to him and to God what belongs to God.

Friends, do we give to Caesar what belongs to God and to God what belongs to Caesar?
