Wheelco Quick Clips | How To Self-Test Your Heavy Duty Fan Clutch
Step 1: Determine what type of fan clutch you are operating with.
» Before diagnosing any Fan Clutch issues, find out what type of Fan Clutch you are using.
Fan Clutches can be:
• Thermal (Hydraulic)
• Non-Thermal (Centrifugal)
• Electric Driven
Step 2: Rotate & wiggle the fan blade.
» With the engine OFF and your key in the ON position.
• Spin the fan clutch fan blade, watching for resistance to the fan blade rotation.
• If the fan blade does not spin freely, you may have an issue with your solenoid or air supply going to the fan clutch.
» With the engine OFF and your key in the OFF position.
• Try spinning the fan blade again.
• The fan blade should have little to no movement if working properly.
» Wiggle your fan blade back & forth towards the radiator and engine.
» Listen & feel for any clicking or abundance in freeplay. This could be a sign of bearing failure.
Step 3: Visually Inspect your fan clutch.
» Look closely at the fan blade and fan clutch, clean off any dirt build-up near or around your fan clutch components.
» Look for damaged or leaking fan clutch components and address immediately.
» Using a spray bottle with soapy water, spray the air hoses to inspect for any air leaks.
Step 4: Listen for noises & fan speeds.
» With the engine running, listen for proper engagement of your fan clutch.
» Watch your dashboard for your rig getting to temperature and listen for your fan clutch engagement & disengagement once the temperature has dropped.
