Géricault. Men and Wild Horses. From Leslie Megahey’s 1986 docu-drama trilogy ‘Artists and Models’.

In the mid 19th century, a writer, Charles Clément, sets out to investigate the mysterious and tragic figure of Theodore Géricault.
The film sets the work of Theodore Géricault (1791-1824) against the background of his time, using silent film footage to suggest imaginary nineteenth-century newsreels, and human models to interpret and comment upon his paintings. Géricault exhibited only three paintings in his lifetime, selling none of them, yet he is now considered one of the greatest painters of his generation. His interest in drawing the male figure and drawing horses is covered, together with his travels and study in Italy in 1816, sketches and studies for unrealised paintings, his obsession with death, the realisation of his masterpiece The Raft of the Medusa (1819), his success in London, his romantic liaisons, the mystery of the identity of the mother of his illegitimate son, his late portraits of the insane and his final illness and death in Paris at the age of just 33.
