Legislators Push University of Colorado to Replace Animals in Deadly Surgery Course

We’re at the Colorado State Capitol, where lawmakers are calling on the University of Colorado Anschutz to replace animals in its deadly surgery course.

At CU Anshutz, surgeons-in-training cut open live pigs to remove organs and perform procedures. Then the animals are killed. But hundreds of medical centers—including Stanford, Yale, and the Cleveland Clinic—teach surgeons using modern methods based on human anatomy, not animals

That’s why 13 state legislators just sent a letter urging CU Anschutz to change.

Simulators based on human anatomy bleed and breathe, they have removable organs, and they can even “die.” Plus, surgeons can practice procedures over and over—something not possible on animals.
