Shopping for a real Berber rug in Morocco
During my trip to Morocco, I visited a traditional village in the Atlas Mountains of the indigenous Amazigh people, and then went on a quest to shop for the perfect wool rug to take home with me! These Moroccan rugs have been frequently copied in shops in North America and Europe in recent years, so I wanted to find out more about their true history on my trip.
My rug shopping experience starts at 4:35 :)
Please note that long after I made this video, I learned that the term Amazigh would be a more correct term for the indigenous people of this region. For more information, you may find this article useful: http://linguisticanthropology.org/sla-blog/respecting-identity-amazigh-versus-berber/#:~:text=Traditionally%2C%20the%20term%20“Berber”,indigenous%20peoples%20of%20North%20Africa.&text=To%20combat%20discrimination%20and%20to,feminine)%20to%20refer%20to%20themselves.
Since I've received so many questions about my rug: The store I visited in this video was called La Source de Tapis (The Carpet Source) in Ourika, about a 40 minute drive from Marrakech in the foothills of the Atlas mountains. Prices on rugs vary dramatically in Morocco depending on many factors including size, style, material (wool, silk, etc.), who made it, where it was sold, etc. This store required negotiation (there are no price tags). I paid approximately US$325 (in 2018) for a 4x6' 100% wool rug. This store had an incredible selection and the quality was much better than anything I saw in Marrakech. It specialized in the so-called Berber style rugs because that is the specific region where they are made. (I am in no way affiliated with the store.) At the time, I stayed at Riad Cle de Sol in nearby Aghmat (see my other videos for more info) and they were familiar with guides in the region who could take you shopping in this area.
