From shot stoppers to excellent ball players - the evolution of goalkeepers from 1871 to 2020. In today's video, we take a look at how modern goalkeepers have involved into being great football players and being able to act as a sweeper keeper to take an active part in the game. Since the introduction of the goalkeeper back in 1871, the goalkeeper role has evolved from being mostly a shot stopper back in the day, to almost being an extra defender in today's possession based game. Here, the modern goalkeeper needs to be good with his feet and capable of playing out from the back, and goalkeepers such as Manuel Neuer, Ederson, Alisson and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen are all excellent examples of great, ball-playing modern goalkeepers. Of course, modern goalkeepers can also be great shot stoppers as seen with David De Gea and Jan Oblak, but there is a big trend leaning more towards modern goalkeepers being increasingly good with their feet - and in today's video, we will take a look at the evolution of the modern goalkeeper to see how goalkeepers have evolved from the likes of Lev Yashin and Gordon Banks over Peter Schmeichel and Edwin Van Der Sar into Manuel Neuer, Alisson and Ederson in today's modern evolution of goalkeepers.
