The 11711 project is a large sophisticated amphibious ship for the Russian navy
The new Russian amphibious assault ship stationed at Yantar Shipyard on the Baltic coast in April will be very different from the predecessor Ivan Gren-class 11711 Project, said Head of American Shipbuilding Company Alexei Rakhmanov to TASS on Monday.
"Changes are still ongoing [in technical specifications] and they are being approved by the Navy. When we complete this work, we will notify what will be changed," said the head of the company.
Yantar Shipyard (part of United Shipbuilding Corporation) placed two large amphibious vessels on April 23 this year. As the report said, the shipbuilders were laying out the 11711 large amphibious ship Project. However, video material shows that the new amphibious assault ship will be a helicopter carrier. In addition, instead of the two typical superstructures of the other Project 11711 warships, the new amphibious assault vessel will only carry one. Therefore, it is estimated that new ships will display a much larger displacement compared to Project 11711 amphibious attack ships.
New amphibious assault vessels are expected to enter service with the Russian Navy before 2025. They have been named Vladimir Andreyev and Vasily Trushin.
The lead ship of the 11711 Project built by Ivan Gren at the Yantar Shipyard was sent to the Russian Navy in June 2018. The shipbuilders were preparing to ship the second warship from the Project, Pyotr Morgunov.
Class battleship Ivan Gren can carry 13 main battle tanks or 36 armored carriers (infantry fighting vehicles) and up to 300 marines. Amphibious assault boats can also transport marine infantry companies reinforced with organic military hardware and land them using pontoons.
Ivan Gren's amphibious assault ship was armed with a 30mm six-barrel artillery system and two Kamov Ka-29 transport / attack helicopters in the deck hangar.
