Social Reproduction, Cultural Capital, Bourdieu and The Jam

In "Reproduction in Education, Society and Culture", Pierre Bourdieu and Jean-Claude Passeron argued that the school system sets up working class children to fail, channelling them into low-status occupations like those of their parents. Exams, by seeming to provide an objective measure of failure, obscure these structural disadvantages of working class children, and legitimise the reproduction of social inequality. More broadly, Bourdieu and Passeron claimed that all cultural institutions draw a veil over some kind of injustice or exploitation, and that this is their purpose. Certain habits and behaviours, such as speaking in a particular way or reading particular newspapers, constitute "cultural capital" that underpins the domination of higher social classes. These issues and concerns are reflected in the music of Paul Weller and The Jam, in songs such as Saturday's Kids, Eton Rifles and Mr Clean.
