My OFF GRID Solar Setup (Ep.27)

I've been living off grid in my Caravan/RV/Camper Van for the past 3 years, using only solar power to operate all electronic devices in my home.

I’ve mentioned in many of my videos this year, how my solar power set up struggles to keep up with my demand, if we experience consecutive cloudy days.

Finally I’ve bought another battery, to complete my set up. So I figured nows a good time to show you how I power my off grid home.

My Caravan is stationary most of the time in one particular spot.

As the sun moves in slightly different directions across the sky throughout the year, we have to shift our solar panels position to make sure it’s facing as much sunlight as possible each day.

As the leaves on the trees grow and the suns position changes each season so does the position of our solar panel.

You may wonder why I don’t have my solar panel attached to the Caravan roof? Well because we experience really hot summers so I park my Caravan under shady trees which would cast too much shade on a panel.

Downsizing and living off grid on a super simple solar set up like mine does require some sacrifices. You really can’t just plug whatever you want whenever you want into the system without first checking the battery levels.

You learn to prioritise the power supply to things like the fridge and lights at night time. You may also need to adjust your daily routine to use more power during sunlight hours and draw less power when the sun goes down.

I’m not saying a solar set up couldn’t supply you with ample power over a 24 hour period, but an affordable and super simple setup like mine requires more management.

I love living off solar power. Firstly it allows me to be more flexible with my caravan location, I don’t have an electricity bill, I’m much more conscious on my power usage and when my power is running low it forces me to connect with myself, process my thoughts rather than distracting myself with technology. But most importantly it forces me to spend time in nature with those I love.
