LI woman survives COVID-19…severe scarring from ventilator left her gasping for breath prior to life
Two months ago, Shrelle White, 55, of Valley Stream, could not imagine that she would live long enough to celebrate her son’s 38th birthday. After surviving COVID-19 and complications from an extended period of time on a ventilator, Ms. White is finally able to enjoy life once again.
Ms. White was admitted to her local hospital at April 3rd after testing positive for COVID-19. One week later, due to a lack of oxygen making it impossible for her to breathe, she was intubated and placed on a ventilator; she remained intubated until April 24th. During this time, she also suffered from acute renal failure and was placed on dialysis while in hospital three times a week. All of this was made even more threatening due to Ms. White’s severe asthma, for which she was being treated by Arthur Trust, MD, her pulmonologist of many years.
Ms. White returned home on May 8th; however, during this time she noticed that her breathing was becoming even more difficult. It was Dr. Trust who diagnosed her with upper airway obstruction In Ms. White’s case, she was attempting to breathe through an airway hole smaller than the opening of a straw.
Dr. Trust suggested she immediately seek treatment with David Zeltsman, MD, who decided that she should undergo a tracheal resection and reconstruction. Tracheal resection is an operation on the windpipe – the tube which connects the voice box to the lungs. It involves a short section of the windpipe being removed and the cut ends of the windpipe are stitched back together. (It should be noted that the surgery, which took place on August 12th, was performed in a space that measures approximately 3 cms).
Ms. White’s condition continues to improve. She is breathing freely, and once again enjoying her family life with her partner, Maggie, also a COVID-19 survivor.
