Lorne Greene Instantly Quit ''Bonanza'' When This Happened

After just 16 episodes of Bonanza, Lorne Greene was ready to walk away. The show was struggling at number 45 in the ratings, and Greene believed his character, Ben Cartwright, was too stiff—too unreal. He demanded change. Producers listened, rewrote the role, and two years later, Bonanza soared to number 2 on television.

But success didn’t bring peace. Behind the scenes, tension ran high. Greene and Pernell Roberts clashed so fiercely that crew members had to separate them. He disagreed with Michael Landon over the show’s creative direction, and after Dan Blocker’s tragic death in 1972, Greene admitted he thought Bonanza should have ended years earlier.

What really went on behind the cameras? The truth is far more complicated—and darker—than the wholesome image that Bonanza ever showed.
