Apple just pulled off the biggest switcheroos in the history of computing. For years, the iPad's chip benchmarked higher than a lot of PCs. And for years we've been wondering what all that power was doing cooped inside an iPad.

There are a lot of people who see the iPad as a legitimate laptop replacement. But when it comes to more demanding workflows that require any kind of file management, the iPad quickly becomes a chore to use.

So why did Apple put their best chip tech inside the iPad all these years? It's simple, they were using the iPad to test out their best chip ideas, build up their expertise and ultimately, put an iPad chip inside a Mac and call it the M1.

The truth is, the Apple M1, is actually just the next generation of the iPad's processor with some fancy marketing on top. It's the chip that blows away the competition on the Mac. And now, Apple had the brilliant idea to put an iPad chip called the M1 inside an iPad Pro and call it a revolution for the iPad Pro. Wow, genius!

I suspect this plan has been in the works for many years which is why Apple is so confident in their prediction that the Apple Silicon transition will be complete within just two years.

So now the logical question is if Apple unified their chip strategy, what does this mean for the future of iPadOS? Will it be absorbed into macOS? Will macOS replace it? Or will iPadOS finally become macOS-like to the point where we don't need to agonise over choosing an iPad Pro or a Mac to do all of our work? At the moment, the latter can feel like a trade-off as iPadOS is just not as capable, fast and full-featured as macOS. And that's both a good thing and a bad thing.

On the plus side, iPadOS is remarkably focused, easy-to-use and snappy. It's light, friendly and visually quite tasty. This is the heart of iPadOS and Apple will need to tread carefully to avoid breaking all the good things about the OS.

On the downside, the OS can be downright frustrating. Apple refuses to acknowledge that the iPad is a real computer. They treat it like a big phone that's almost a computer.

iPadOS is an awkward teenage phase at the moment where it still doesn't really know what it wants to be. On the path between phone and full-blown computer, iPadOS is about two-thirds of the way there. The last third of the journey is where all the good computery stuff live. Things like full external monitor support, a real desktop-class browser, real file management with a real finder, some kind of desktop, windowed apps, pro apps like Final Cut Pro and of course, developer tools like Xcode.

The next iPadOS should pull out all the stops and set the iPad free. And the odds of that happening are extremely slim.
Full external monitor support? Forget about it. This feature requires Apple to completely redesign the homescreen, enable windowed apps and completely break Apple's precious grid of apps. Apple will see the benefit of adding this feature, weigh up the number of people who will potentially use it, compare that number to how it would impact MacBook sales and come to the conclusion that it is too damaging to their bottom line to make it a reality.

Hoping for a desktop-class browser? Think again. Web apps threaten App Store sales and will disincentivise developers from creating iPad apps. And Apple can't allow that to happen. The number of apps in the App Store is a major differentiator and selling point when it comes to iPad marketing.
