MUST KNOW - Melodic Guitar Soloing With Chord Tones
► Grab lesson files: https://goo.gl/mfT1h1 - So, did this sound like I was playing the C major scale the whole time?
Well I was, but, inspired by David Gilmour and many others, I highlighted the CHORD TONES.
What's this all about then? Chord tones? Yeah baby, and it's the SECRET everyone probably knows! haha!
Emphasizing chord tones is a simple and powerful approach to playing MELODICALLY. You can't fail with chord tones. Arpeggios and triads are the chord tones in this way: if you are playing over a C major 7 chord, you are playing chord tones if you play any of the notes from the triad: CEG. The same is true if you play the note B, which appears in the C major 7 chord.... and so on - clear as mud? Triad: 3 notes, but for example, a C Maj9 arpeggio would have 1-3-5-7-9, so 5 notes. Obviously, you don't have to play every single note of the chord - you can just play 1 or 2 notes from the chord - you're still playing the chord notes.
From this lesson, I hope you can see that practicing the major scale, TOGETHER with triads and arpeggio exercises is something you want to master.
