The NEW Sony 100mm f1.8 GM Macro

This is the latest G Master lens from Sony, and it’s coming in hot with some really exciting (and innovative) features.

** This is not a review! Stay tuned for my thoughts after using this lens a bit longer…In the meantime, here are some specs and initial thoughts:

It’s got 4 XD linear autofocus motors (the super fast, quiet, smooth ones), an 11-bladed aperture, OSS (and it’s now dynamic, based on the lens’ focus distance, not just focal length), is weather sealed, has a manual focus clutch (with linear manual focusing), and offers 1.4x magnification on the lens itself.

Something that really sets this lens apart is it’s compatibility with Sony’s teleconverters. So, not only does the teleconverter multiply the focal length by the conversion factor, but also the magnification reproduction. Meaning with the 1.4x teleconverter, you get about 2x magnification and with the 2x teleconverter, the lens magnification jumps to 2.8x!

Not to mention, this lens can easily be used as a dedicated 100mm portrait lens and thanks to the updated focus motors, it can keep up with the a9iii’s 120 fps burst shooting.

I should also note that I was taken by surprise with how lightweight this lens is….It’s not necessarily a small lens, but it feels way lighter than I assumed it would be! Especially considering the OSS inside. This lens is also very, very sharp - one of the cleanest lenses I’ve ever used.

Finally, and surprisingly, the price of this lens, in my opinion, is very fair. $1499 US and $1799 CAN for a super clean macro lens with versatility to be used as a portrait lens and with teleconverters.
