A hippie paradise or a covid nest? Staying in Mazunte (and Zipolite). This is the first part of our stay around Mazunte focusing the content more on the vibe of the place. Watch the next video to see all kinds of activities you can do around Mazunte!

After our amazing stay in San José del Pacifíco we continued our road in Oaxaca to the Pacific Ocean towards what is called the Riviera Oaxaqueña that comprises Mazunte, San Agustinillo, Zipolite, and Puerto Angel. The way to get there is through the terrible winding road Highway 175, which got me nauseous even though I was driving… First, we were staying in Mazunte (Pueblo Magico) ad well as in San Agustinillo. I am usually not a huge fan of beaches, especially for making videos, but this place had a kind of special atmosphere. There you could really feel a modern kind of hippie culture, mixed with some hipsterism and traditions too. We kind of spend our time there with the same energy, just walking around relaxing, exploring the beach and the alleys, letting us sink into the place and ways of living of the locals. I especially loved the style of certain people that moved to live there. I wish I could interact more with them in this video, but this is gonna be for future ones (encountering people playlist).

One surprise was to discover that people kind of live their life there as if covid didn’t exist. People don’t wear the mask much and just keep their life the same and everything is open. I was first a bit worried about this but we remained cautious and used liters and liters of hand sanitizer sprays. Except for this, it felt very safe. The whole area is also very eco-friendly with eco-tourism activities.

We moved quite a lot and then went to Zipolite where Ari booked an amazing hotel there. Zipolite had even more of a hippie vibe, although maybe more foreign populated and holidays-like than Mazunte which felt more local in a strange manner. Zipolite is also the only legal naturist beach in Mexico, something I am not a stranger to. As a central European, it’s not very rare to go to naturist places with family, which was my case when I grew up. The amazing advantages of those naturist places are that it has much fewer people and the vibe is very chill. However, it felt few people were playing the fair game, keeping their swimming clothes on, something usually less common in other naturist beaches I have been to.

After our little stay in Zipolite, we headed back to Mazunte for a couple more days. There we were looking for a place to stay without having booked in advance which was an interesting exercise that we show in the video. This was our way of showing how to find a good place for value when traveling. We also had to go to San Pedro Pochutla searching for ATMs as they aren’t so common in the beach area.
