Electric eels also have another unusual trait: they breathe air. Instead of relying only on gills like most fish, they regularly swim to the surface to gulp air, absorbing oxygen through a highly vascularized lining in their mouth. This adaptation allows them to survive in low-oxygen waters where many other fish cannot live.

Scientists have long studied electric eels because their ability to generate electricity provides insight into bioelectric systems and even inspires research in technology and medical science.
