BT Moto Tech Tip: S1000RR Coil Failure Diagnosis

Something usually overlooked by owners but can never be ignored is the ignition coil failure that happens to some bikes.

Symptoms are usually the bike sounding odd like it’s “missing”, bike is down on power, power feels jerky. There may not even be a dash error for something like this. This is what confuses some people.

Easiest way to diagnose the issue, if your bike is having any of theee symptoms, is by getting a thermometer and while the bike is running, scan each cylinder. You can get to two cylinders from each side of the bike. The temp will be much hotter than in the video (hundreds of degrees hotter). You’re looking for one cylinder that is much cooler than the rest. Naturally, the outside cylinders will be cooler than the inside cylinders, and that's normal.

Find the one cylinder that is much cooler than the rest and that is the culprit. You can then remove the coil and verify it’s bad with a multimeter then replace. The coil isn’t the issue 100% of the time but with the 2020+ S1000RR it’s likely.
