Fuel cells and diesel-electric, air-independent propulsion submarines are quieter than nuclear-powered submarines. Although nuclear-powered submarines are not particularly large, they may have a cooling system.
When the coolant is transferred around the reactor and then the heat is removed, a kind of pump is needed to transport the liquid coolant, which naturally becomes a kind of acoustic signature.
In the past diesel submarines were limited by the need to operate noisy, air-consuming engines, which meant they could stay underwater for a few days before surfacing......
The German Type 212 class, considered one of the most advanced diesel-electric attack submarines in the world, was the first to use the AIP system using hydrogen fuel cells. According to submarine authority HI Sutton, Type 212s use proton exchange membranes with hydrogen fuel cells, allowing subsets to sink for up to three weeks, with practically no detectable emissions.
The double hull of the Type 212 sinks 1,800 tons, and is made of non-magnetic material that makes it impossible to detect magnetic irregularities. The soft metal limits the operating depth to only two hundred meters, but this is not the main limitation in shallow Baltic waters....
