Bell X-5: The FIRST Swing-Wing Jet. Rolled Out 1951. Nazi DNA. F-14's GRANDFATHER.

In 1951, six years after receiving the Nazi P.1101 prototype, Bell Aircraft rolled out the X-5—the world's first aircraft capable of varying its wing sweep angle in flight. It bore a striking resemblance to the captured German design, but Bell's engineers had solved the fundamental problem: how to move the wings without making the aircraft uncontrollable. The X-5 used a mechanism that slid the wings forward as they swept forward, keeping the center of pressure aligned with the center of gravity. This breakthrough directly paved the way for every variable-sweep aircraft that followed—the F-111, the B-1, the MiG-23, and ultimately the F-14 Tomcat. The Nazi prototype captured in a Bavarian research lab became the grandfather of an entire generation of combat aircraft.
