Jack the Ripper

More than 130 years after the murders, Jack the Ripper remains the most famous serial killer in history—and the only one whose identity remains unknown. Hundreds of books have proposed hundreds of suspects. None have proven conclusive. The mystery endures.

But the victims have been forgotten. Their names are known only to Ripperologists. Their faces are unfamiliar. Their lives—their struggles, their hopes, their families—have been overshadowed by the monster who killed them.

This book changes that.

Jack the Ripper is a comprehensive, narrative-driven account of the Autumn of Terror. It begins not with the killer, but with the world that produced him: the overcrowded tenements, the dark alleys, the desperate poverty of Victorian Whitechapel. It introduces the women who walked those streets—not as prostitutes or victims, but as mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives. It follows the investigation through the eyes of the detectives who hunted the Ripper: Inspector Frederick Abberline, Chief Inspector Donald Swanson, and the other officers who worked themselves to exhaustion trying to catch a ghost.

The book examines the letters that made the Ripper a celebrity: the "Dear Boss" letter, which gave him his name; the "Saucy Jacky" postcard, which referenced the Double Event before the police released the details; and the "From Hell" letter, sent with half a human kidney preserved in spirits of wine. It weighs the evidence for and against the most famous suspects: Montague Druitt, the drowned barrister; Aaron Kosminski, the Polish barber; Francis Tumblety, the quack doctor; and the royal conspiracy theories that refuse to die.

It explores the birth of Ripperology—the amateur and professional researchers who have devoted their lives to solving the case—and the ethical questions that arise when violence becomes entertainment. It considers the copycat murders, the Thames torsos, the Whitehall Mystery, and the possibility that the Ripper killed far more than five women.

And it concludes with what we still do not know: the profile of the killer, the reasons for his violence, the failures of the investigation, and the reasons the case will likely never be solved.
