Salt Dome Energy Storage - the Energy Storage System of Tomorrow by Cavern Energy Storage | I3D
This is an energy storage animated explainer video produced by Industrial3D for Cavern Energy Storage.
Solar and wind energy are weather-dependent energy sources and, therefore, are out of sync with consumer demand, driving the need for more energy storage. DOE has estimated that America needs 1000 gigawatts of energy storage. This animation explains the current energy storage systems used, as well as how much energy storage they can produce.
Through this animation, the case for salt dome energy storage is given. Areas generally flat, such as Texas, Louisiana, and the gulf shore system, have underground salt domes. Salt domes are massive underground formations of salt that people have been drilling into to mine out the salt, creating massive storage caverns.
Certain industries are already using salt dome caverns to store various fuels. Cavern Energy Storage plans to use salt dome caverns as the upper and lower reservoirs for underground pump store hydroelectric. The system works exactly as a hydroelectric facility, except most of it is underground. You will see through this animation how it works.
A small commercial unit would be able to store over a gigawatt-hour of electricity and only occupy 90 acres of the salt dome and less than 10% of surface area – leaving the land open for other uses. Underground pump storage hydroelectric can provide large-scale energy storage for the gulf coast region and other parts of the world where salt domes are found. Cavern Energy Storage is working to provide the energy storage system of Tomorrow.
