Cycling Japan - Day 10. Back to Honshu

Day 10.

Started the morning in Takamatsu with breakfast from the local supermarket. Most places seemed pretty shut because it was Sunday, so it was a fairly quiet start to the day.

It was a short ride to the ferry terminal before taking two ferries back across from Shikoku to Honshu. I originally thought it would involve changing ferries properly, but in the end it was basically just a case of getting off briefly and then back on again after buying a new ticket.

Once back on Honshu, the riding started off really nicely. A mix of scenic coastal roads and sections of main road. Stopped at a konbini for lunch before carrying on through a large industrial port area, which then eventually gave way to scenic riding again.

The afternoon became extremely hot, and later in the day, the planned main road suddenly didn’t look very bike-friendly, so I diverted off it to avoid some of the tunnels. That turned into lots of short, sharp climbs and descents, which made the final part of the day harder than expected.

Eventually rolled into Onomichi, which is very touristy. But i had booked my room in advance after the accommodation chaos in Takamatsu yesterday.

The hotel gave me a bike bag to bring the bike inside, but unfortunately my xxl road bike with bags was never going to fit in it, so it ended up locked outside alongside the other bikes instead.

Finished the evening at an Italian restaurant after dealing with some Garmin/Strava chaos. Lost the original ride file after pausing the activity, so this upload had to be reconstructed from the route file instead. Actual distance and altitude were probably slightly higher than recorded, with an average speed of about 23.5 kph from memory.

Overall, though, another really enjoyable day.
