The Adventures of the Silly Bunny - Chapter 1

Once upon a time in a forest far, far away from here - yet closer than you may think - there was a rabbit den – a sort of cozy cavern dug deep into the side of the mossy covered hill. Of course you and I would never have noticed this hutch because we are merely mortals. Our eyes only notice shiny objects, our ears accustomed to thunderous music, our noses seduced by vanilla candles burning at the outlet mall and our mouths watering at the taste of greasy salt covered french fries. No, we would never have found this hutch buried deep in the hill, but there it was, plain for the inhabitants of the forest to discover.

Under the fern and protected by layers of moss the front door of the rabbits' home was marked by two rocks propped upright on either side. Inside, what we would call a hall, was a long tunnel. Long and narrow – too narrow for the pointy-nosed fox to make his way inside and too long for the mice to take up residence since they preferred someplace close to the surface with roots hanging from the ceiling and shreds of cloth tucked into the corners.

On this momentous day shortly before the beginning of spring two older rabbits sat around the kitchen table with their son, a surprisingly mature son, who you would think would not still be at home. But here he was, and the time had come for him to finally make his way in the world beyond.

“But I don't want to go,” he insisted adamantly to his parents. “I'm quite comfortable here.”

“You have to go,” his father said. “This is what rabbits do. They go.”

“I'm not like my brothers and sisters. I'm different,” the reluctant rabbit said.

“Don't be silly,” his mother scolded. “You are very special to me,” she said, “but you aren't any different from the dozens of children I've had before. And next week there will be six more children needing my undivided attention.”

“I can help!” the silly bunny offered.

“No, you cannot,” his father said. “Wash your whiskers, pick up your bag, and start your journey.”

“But I don't know where to go,” the young silly bunny said.

“That's the best part of life,” his mother smiled. “We don't know where we'll go.”

His father brushed his son's ears affectionately. “The places you will see, the delights you will smell, the wonders you will taste. And most importantly, the friendships you'll make. Today is the beginning of your great adventure!”

And with that his father escorted him down the great hall, sniffed the breeze for pointy-nosed foxes as they came to the portal entrance, and then gave his son a solid thump with his back legs, launching him into the world.

“Don't forget to send post cards!” his father exclaimed as he scurried back up the dark tunnel and the portal entrance disappeared into the thick of ferns and moss.

And thus the Adventure of the Silly Bunny was begun.
