Rep. Adam Schiff, the House Intelligence Committee chair, spoke after Kurt Volker, the former U.S. special envoy to Ukraine, and Tim Morrison, a former White House official who served on the National Security Council, delivered the testimonies on Nov. 19, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. The impeachment inquiry has focused on a July 25 phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Schiff said the withholding of military assistance to Ukraine in order to get these investigations is significant because "Ukrainians are dying every day in their war with Russia." The idea of withholding that aid "should be anathema to every American because it means the sacrifice, not just of Ukrainian national security, but American national security for the interest of the president personally and politically." Schiff said his Republican colleagues' objection was not that he sought an investigation into a political rival or engaged in unethical behavior, "their objection is that he got caught, their objection is that someone blew the whistle!"
