PANERIAI / PONAR Forest Memorial - Tragic Site near Vilnius LITHUANIA

PANERIAI FOREST is 11km southwest of the centre of Vilnius. It is a beautiful area that was the location of the horrific killings of between 70,000 to 100,000 people during the Nazi invasion of Lithuania between 1941 and 1944.

The majority of the victims were Lithuanian Jews, but the Nazis also ordered the killing of Roma, Poles, Soviet POWs and Lithuanian partisans.

We had seen photos of murders at this tragic site when we visited POLIN Museum of the History of the Polish Jews in Warsaw, back in February.

We knew we wanted to visit the memorials to the innocents who had been killed so horrifically, and pay our respects.

We must never forget.
