Meet Benson rescued from Dunstable after being found on the road - Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary

Meet Benson rescued from Dunstable after being found on the road. Benson had lots of nasty fleas on him which have all gone. Eating well by himself which is fantastic :)

A slightly older video as I'm catching up on socials.

WHY HAS THE UK WILD HEDGEHOG POPULATION DECLINED SO MUCH SINCE THE YEAR 2000?
As of 2022, The Wild British Hedgehog has been included in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List for British Mammals. Hedgehogs have declined by between 30% - 75% across different areas of the countryside since 2000. The reasons for their decline are complex and aren’t yet fully understood, but two of the main pressures hedgehogs face in both rural and urban areas is lack of suitable habitat and habitat fragmentation. In 2020, it was estimated (PTES) that up to 335k hedgehogs are killed each year on the roads. Roads also create invisible barriers for hedgehogs. Their habitats have been diminishing and their inability to access and travel through gardens and across roads has become in most cases, impossible. The use of poisons like slug pellets, and intensive agricultural farming also have a part to play in their decreased populations. Along with loss of hedges and the use of pesticides.
