During WWII, Coca-Cola’s German branch lost access to Coke syrup because of the U.S. embargo and wartime blockades. Desperate to stay alive, they invented a new drink using apple fibers, whey, and leftover sugar scraps.

They called it Fanta.

But the original version wasn’t orange. The bright orange soda we know today came years later after the war.
