BRCA2 Positive - Elective Bilateral Prophylactic Mastectomy With Reconstruction || 2024-21

Last year, her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and through genetic testing, it was found that she carried the hereditary BRCA2 gene, so she got tested and it came back positive that she also carried the gene.

After months of doctor appointments and conversations, she decided to take a proactive approach and move forward with a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy with reconstruction. It is not an easy decision, but she hopes by documenting this and talking about it, it can provide insight for other women that may face the same decision.

Family History: If there is a significant family history of breast cancer, especially in close relatives who also carry the BRCA2 mutation, individuals may opt for a mastectomy to break the cycle of cancer within their family.
Psychological Relief: Constant worry and anxiety about developing breast cancer can take a toll on mental health. Electing for a mastectomy can provide psychological relief, alleviating the fear of cancer and allowing individuals to focus on living their lives fully.
Personal Choice: Ultimately, the decision to undergo a mastectomy is deeply personal. Some individuals may prioritize risk reduction above all else, while others may weigh various factors such as body image, lifestyle, and future plans before making their decision.
