How Microphone Variances Can Affect Bass Levels

Programs like Room EQ Wizard (REW) provide powerful measurement tools for calibrators to measure and analyze system frequency response and room acoustics to optimize the sound of home theater or hi-fi systems. Choosing a good microphone is important for achieving accurate and consistent results. Caution should be advised that even with the calibration files installed for your microphone, variations between microphones at bass frequencies can be significant enough to require adjustments to your room target curves to achieve optimal bass levels.

In this video, I demonstrate how variances can be as high as 3-4dB between different UMIK-1s. This discrepancy can cause your bass levels to sound too high or too low if you rely solely on a predefined room target curve without performing actual post-calibration listening tests.
