Your Key To Success: Vegan Omega 3

Todays going to be an epic vlog on Your Key To Success: vegan omega 3. Also in todays video I clean my baby and I have a ridiculous amount of washing before we go to Cornwall at the weekend.

If this is our first time meeting, yo. I vlog as many times as I can a week on vegan health and nutrition. I am currently just finishing a masters in nutrition and qualifying as a nutritionist and next year I will be doing a Phd in nutritional science.

So hit that subscribe button, hit that bell notification and make me a happy smiling vegan!

So the first thing that I want to cover off is that there are 3 types of omega-3’s that are pivotal for human health. ALA which comes from nuts and seeds etc. And EPA and DHA. Now most non vegans will get there EPA and DHA from fish, but there are obviously vegan sources for both EPA and DHA.

Now my ultimate favourite source of omega-3’s is in the form of marine phytoplankton. We are lucky in Europe because we have a form of phytoplankton called NanoChloropsis Gaddy Tana which can help deliver unbelievable nutrition to humans. And this is shipped all around the world so be sure to look it up where ever you are in the world.

Now if you are wondering what the hell is marine phytoplankton is then it’s basically the algae that powers all life forms in the ocean. So when people eat fish to get omega-3’s, that fish has eaten marine phytoplankton and algae where that omega-3 is then accumulated in its body. So fish don’t actually produce omega-3’s themselves, they eat it.

Now these algae organisms have all different kinds of properties and chemistry types, but there are a few different strains that have exceptional qualities for human nutrition. And as I said just now the nanochloropsis is one of those strains that is going to have a big big future in human health and nutrition.

Now in powder form, marine phytoplankton is up to 10% EPA and I am talking about the EPA which is in fish and fish oil supplements, Ecosapentanoeic acid. This fatty acid is so important for neurological function because it’s a long chain-omega 3 which is different from the short chain ala types of omega-3’s.

And these long chain omega-3’s are going to be a lot more in the public realm with the high levels of heart and neurological diseases we are facing today. And because of the amount of pollution in the oceans which is bioaccumulated in fish and fish oils, it means that people are looking at cleaner vegan sources of omega-3’s that can be ethically sourced.

When you analyse the nutritional and chemistry makeup of marine phytoplankton you quickly learn that its an ideal food for eye health and also an ideal food for the neurological development of children.

This is because its loaded with the long chain omega-3’s like EPA, it includes all the phospholipids and cofactors that make the EPA work better in the body and by dry weight most good quality marine phytoplankton’s are around 60-70% protein.

And on top of this those EPA and phospholipids are coated in astaxanthin, violaxanthine and zeaxanthin and many other unique carotenoids that go directly to the eyes when you eat it and it also goes directly to the brain supporting brain health.

So when you combine all these different types of lipids, omega-3’s and proteins you start thinking wow this is a food that is so go for the nervous system, for heart health, for brain health and even for skin health.

Now there are some people who have said that the nutrition from marine phytoplankton is difficult for the human body to access because of outer layer of the algae is hard to break down. Now this maybe true for a few species in the chlorella family, but for marine phytoplankton you don’t have this problem.

Marine phytoplankton are a single celled organism with an outer later that even very easy to break down. In fact you put it in to ethanol or methanol then it will just dissolve, so when you eat it or put it in a smoothie then it is absorbed very well in the body.

Now the reason I like marine phytoplankton as a great source of omega-3 is that it delivers high amounts of DHA and EPA in their active forms. There is a lot of controversy around whether the body can convert enough short chain ALA omega-3’s into the longer chain DHA and EPA. So I use marine phytoplankton as an insurance policy.

I eat flax and chia etc to give my body lots of ALA’s. But then I also take a teaspoon of marine phytoplankton a day in my smoothie to ensure that my body has enough of those longer chain omega-3’s for optimal health.

This is an essential strategy especially if you are pregnant as foetal health is dependent on those longer chain omega-3’s, so you don’t want to be risking your childs health.
