Former US President Barack Obama said democracy is under “assault” as he delivered remarks while paying tribute to civil rights leader Jesse Jackson Sr. in Chicago. Obama credited Jackson’s presidential runs in the 1980s for paving the way for future Black leaders, including himself.

Obama was joined by former US presidents Joe Biden and Bill Clinton at the memorial, where the leaders honoured Jackson’s legacy and impact on American politics.
