News Article :-
New York Jets legend Nick Mangold has died aged 41, just weeks after pleading for a kidney transplant.
Mangold announced earlier in October that he was battling chronic kidney disease as a result of a genetic defect that was discovered in 2006. He had been undergoing dialysis and was in need of a transplant.
Mangold was selected by the Jets in the first round of the of the 2006 NFL Draft, and he spent the entirety of his 11-year NFL career with the franchise. The center earned hero status among the fanbase and he was beloved in the locker room. Just a few weeks ago, he spoke out to defend the character of his former teammate Mark Sanchez, who is embroiled in legal trouble.
"Nick was more than a legendary center," Jets owner Woody Johnson said. "He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.
"Off the field, Nick's wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family."
Mangold had four children — Matthew, Eloise, Thomas and Charlotte — with his wife, Lauren. On Oct. 14, the Ohio State alum and Jets Ring of Honor member issued a plea to fans for a donor.
"To my NY Jets & Ohio State Buckeye communities. This isn't an easy message to share, but I want to be open about what's been happening with me and my health," he said in a statement.
