After only 6 months—many who have never picked up a set of bagpipes or played drums before have learned the theory of music and the rudiments of their instruments, not to mention that the drummers have to learn the bugle as well, then have to learn to march while playing these new tunes—the students firm up to showcase what they have learned in a pass out parade to graduate from the school. The standard they have reached by this point is good, but still only the beginning. Now they will head back to their own battalions and continue to improve upon these skills and will regularly be called upon to join their own bands for ceremonial parade duties, alongside their normal day to day work as soldiers in the British Army… personally, having witnessed this process, and as a non-player in their world, I think they have done an amazing job…
