Deliberate practice is the reason why professionals progress, while amateurs stay stuck. When they talk about the 10000 hour rule they mean ten thousand hours of deliberate practice. Deliberate or purposeful practice means that you stay just outside your current ability to increase your ability. When you stay in this spot your skill will grow.
