Calhoun County Humane Society - Enrichment
ALABAMA FUNDRAISER UPDATE: Before Christmas, I organized a fundraiser for the Calhoun County Humane Society in Alabama (remember I was selling those adorable shirts – which btw I have been wearing nonstop since…!).
Because this shelter is no-kill and sees very few adopters, they have lots of long timers - some dogs have been waiting for 5 years and more.
Before the holidays, I asked them if they needed help with anything, and one of their dreams was to get children playground equipment to start an enrichment program. It was inspired by Mystique, one of their long timers who was on the edge of euthanasia because she was so shut down and depressed… until she discovered the slide!! They only needed $1,500, which we raised in a blink…
In total, we raised about $13,000 for the shelter! Since then, I have been in constant contact with them, checking in on progresses. So far, they have neutered almost everyone. And, more excitingly, they built the playground set up, and added soothing music to the kennel. They just sent me some videos and look how amazing everything is!
The look on these dogs’ faces, when they get to slide down or jump through hoops or play tug of war to their heart’s content… The relaxed faces as they enjoy soothing music in their kennel instead of a deafening concerto of barks... Everything has me in tears! But most of all, it’s the joy on the staff faces that I can never forget.
I can never thank you enough for all you help build and all the organizations you help support. Thank you!! And I am so incredibly proud of the shelter’s staff for stepping their game up for the dogs. It’s really not easy to keep growing and to keep pushing forward in this line of work.
If you would like to continue supporting the shelter, please visit http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/ for ways to help. If you are in Alabama and looking to adopt, please consider their animals! That adorable pittie (white/cream with blue eyes) that nails the parkour? That’s Stevie and he is hearing impaired + dog friendly!
