Kentucky woman recounts surviving tornado

Workers on the night shift at Mayfield Consumer Products were in the middle of the holiday rush, cranking out candles, when a tornado closed in on the factory and the word went out to take cover.

Autumn Kirks, one of the employees, said they barely had time to evacuate to a hallway when the building was ripped apart.

Kirks recalled that another employee came to their rescue after her and others were trapped under a wall.

"He just came over and just lifted the wall and started lifting pieces until he could get us out, and he got me into the three girls out," said Kirks. "One of the girls was crushed really bad and the guy, I'm pretty sure his leg was broke."

On Sunday, the candle company said that eight workers were confirmed dead and eight remained missing, more than 90 others had been located.

Kentucky was the worst-hit state by far in an unusual mid-December swarm of twisters across the Midwest and the South that leveled entire communities and left at least 14 people dead in four other states.
