The corruption of political language

In this mini-lecture, Brendan O’Neill takes the promiscuous use of political language to task. Terms like left and right have been emptied of meaning and Orwellian newspeak from ‘humanitarian intervention’ to ‘pregnant people’ abound, whilst other neologisms like ‘Brexiteer’ and ‘Remainer’ have a clear function in discussion. O’Neill and respondents also debate the role of political correctness and identity politics in creating a new linguistic dishonesty, and ask what, if anything, can be done to add clarity and meaning to political language in future.

Filmed at the Battle of Ideas 2017, the lecture is given by Brendan O’Neill and the respondents are Rachel Halliburton, Nick Hilton and Dr. Paul A. Taylor. The chair is Jacob Furedi.
