Why ING Chooses Kotlin for Server-Side

ING’s Mobile Banking team shares how they modernized their mission-critical payment engine using Kotlin, powering 6 million mobile users and handling 4.5 billion payments a year. The move from a large Java codebase to a cleaner Kotlin architecture improved code quality, stability, and resource efficiency—especially thanks to null-safety and coroutines. The team rebuilt the system with a hexagonal architecture, clearly separating domain logic and streamlining external integrations. Kotlin made handling heavy I/O far more efficient, keeping response times low even at peak traffic. After the migration, null-related runtime issues disappeared, enabling a smooth rollout of the new payment engine in the Netherlands.
