Clip from Insurrection: A Work In Progress, performed at the Royal Opera House in London

In honor of International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, sharing a clip of acclaimed baritone Peter Brathwaite wearing a Shaggy Bear masquerade costume while dancing with his mother at the end of Insurrection: A Work In Progress, which I saw earlier this week at the Linbury Theatre within the Royal Opera House in London.

"Insurrection: A Work In Progress explores the history of resistance in Barbados through Peter’s personal story. Taking its cue from the radical folk traditions of enslaved Black workers, this new performance piece celebrates the human need to gather, move, make music, and tell stories amid and in response to oppression. With a subversive musical playlist featuring the suppressed folk songs of enslaved workers, British pro-slavery propaganda musicand excerpts from 19th-century opera, this new, as-yet unfinished work introduces a vital new voice to the conversation about our shared past."

P.S. They are dancing to the chorus of John Belly Mama, a Barbados folk song. The chorus goes:

Come down when ah call yuh
Come down in yuh shoes an stockin's!
Come down wit you two knees knockin'!
Come down wit yuh trousers droppin'!
Come down!
