‘Scattered Spider’ Member ‘Tylerb’ Pleads Guilty

A senior member of the cybercrime group Scattered Spider known as “Tylerb” pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft for summer 2022 SMS-phishing campaigns that allowed the group to breach at least a dozen major tech companies and steal tens of millions in cryptocurrency. He is in U.S. custody awaiting sentencing and faces more than 20 years in prison. SMS phishing and identity theft enable account takeovers that can cause large financial losses and wide enterprise compromise. Defenders should enforce phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication and harden account-recovery flows.
