How a 9th-Century Gospel Ended Up in a Texas Hardware Store #history #ww2 #mystery #amberroom

How did a priceless 9th-century Gospel and medieval treasures worth millions end up wrapped in a blanket in a small Texas hardware store? 😱

In 1945, American Lieutenant Joe Meador discovered a hidden cache in Quedlinburg, Germany. Instead of turning it over, he stole it — ancient manuscripts with gold and silver, jeweled reliquaries, and 12th-century crucifixes.

He shipped everything back to Texas and quietly kept these masterpieces in his house for decades while running a family hardware store. He even bragged to friends about owning treasures no one else knew about.

Only after his death in 1990 did his heirs try to sell them — triggering a massive international scandal and FBI investigation.

Germany eventually bought back its own treasures for $2.75 million.

One of the boldest cultural thefts in history.
