Emma Thompson is a British actress, Oscar Winning Screenwriter, producer, author, and comedian. In 1995 she scripted and starred in Sense and Sensibility, which earned her numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay - which makes her the only person to receive Academy Awards for acting and writing - and a second BAFTA Award for Best Actress.
1. Screenplays are about ellipsis. Write everything and then take out as much as you can.
2. To keep the momentum in your plot, make sure there is an important event in every scene so there are no scenes that are just there without a purpose.
3. Since you can’t adapt a whole book into your film, first dramatise the whole book, and see which parts of it work and put only those into your screenplay. Then fill in the missing parts with your imagination to create the whole skeleton.
4. To find the best point to start your film, try removing the first three scenes in your script and see if your screenplay still works.
5. Men’s comedy and women’s comedy are different; our humorous natures each go hand in hand with our sexual and orgasmic nature.
6. Making a screenplay into a film is like adapting a book into a screenplay - when you do it, you will start to notice which parts were essential and which can be taken out.
7. An idea for a film can come from a piece of music or even a line of lyric from which you can develop a whole story, expanding it draft after draft.
8. Discover where your relationship with words comes from.
9. Make stage directions in your script funny and make them short and snappy.
10. Act out your scenes. Always write something that feels natural to say out loud.
