Notes: Banyan trees, also known as strangler figs, are a fascinating group of trees that start their lives as epiphytes, growing on other trees. They begin as seedlings that germinate on another tree, or host. As the banyan seedling grows, it develops aerial roots that extend downwards from its branches that envelop the host tree, effectively strangling it and becoming the dominant plant.
