The Running Man (1987) is a science fiction action film directed by Paul Michael Glaser and based on the novel by Stephen King, written under his pseudonym Richard Bachman. Set in a dystopian future where the economy has collapsed and society is controlled through propaganda, the story follows Ben Richards, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, a wrongfully accused man forced to participate in a deadly televised game show. In the show, convicted criminals must evade armed “stalkers” in a gladiator-style battle for survival, broadcast as entertainment to distract the masses.
The film explores themes of media manipulation, state control, and the dehumanizing effects of violence as spectacle. Richards, once a police pilot framed for disobeying orders, becomes a symbol of resistance as he fights for his life on live television.
