Why WWI's "Winners" Wished for Death 🥺🪖

"We were starving, barely able to move, and so miserable that many of us wished a bullet would simply end it." 🚨🪖

After five days of brutal, relentless fighting at the Battle of the Marne, Allied troops threw themselves into ditches, completely physically and mentally broken. Historian G.J. Meyer famously described how the celebration of the German retreat was instantly overshadowed by utter exhaustion. Winning the battle didn't matter when both the Allied forces and the retreating Germans were suffering under equally horrifying, inhumane conditions.
