Presenter John Mortimer Q.C. sets the stage with his opening remarks: "You are about to watch a trial for High Treason, the sentence for which is death. The year is 1779. Three years earlier, on July 4, 1776, the American Colonies rebelled against Britain... To the government in England, it was a lawless mutiny. It will be another four years before the peace treaty ending the Revolutionary War of Independence is signed; but today, in 1779, George Washington, General of the Continental Army and Founding Father of the United States of America, has voluntarily come to London to answer the charge of treason against the King. Of course, George Washington never really came to London to stand trial fo treason; but in this trial, you will see what might have happened if he had. What you're about to see is a real trial, conducted by real barristers in front of real judges. George Washington, and the other witnesses (Lord North, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin), are played by experts in historical interpretation, but there is no script. ...you will see this trial live, and unrehearsed. The prosecution is lead by the eminent South African Queen's Counsel Sydney Kentridge, the man who conducted Stephen Biko's appeal and defended the Sharpeville Six. The defense is in the hands of a team of American lawyers. Neither side, nor the witnesses, know what will happen next...
