Hail to the Chiefs: Kansas City’s Journey to the Super Bowl 50 Years in the Making

The Kansas City Chiefs, led by MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes, will take the field in Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The regular season highlights were filled with explosive offense performances from superstars Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins and rookie Mecole Hardman.

Despite having the number one offense last year, the Chiefs fell short of the Super Bowl due to a poor performing defense. Two days after the Chiefs loss in the AFC Conference Championship to the New England Patriots, head coach Andy Reid hired new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

“Spags” gutted the defensive side of the ball, releasing the majority of the roster including veterans Justin Houston, Eric Berry and trading Dee Ford to the 49ers. In their place, general manager Brett Veach recruited Pro-Bowl caliber talent in Frank Clark from the Seattle Seahawks and Tyrann Mathieu who was coming off a one year deal with the Houston Texans.

The revitalized defense paired with this high-flying offense, guided by coach Reid, took the Chiefs somewhere they haven’t been in 50 years: back to the Super Bowl.

This is a tribute video to this team, but it’s also a tribute to the teams from years past. And whether you were a fan of the team in 1970 or a fan in 2020, the Chiefs’ red and gold runs deep, heard from millions in Arrowhead, the loudest stadium in the world.
