CALTAGIRONE, SICILY

As we head to baroque towns of the Val Di Noto in Sicily, we hopped the small towns along the way as time allowed. After Piazza Armerina, we headed to Caltagirone on September 7, 2019 day#8. Calatgirone is an inland city/commune of Catania, known for its artistic production of ceramics and terra-cotta sculptures. An old town as beautiful and intriguing as its sister city - San Francisco, whose name was derived from the Arabic "qal'at-al-jarar" ("Castle of pottery/jars") where century-old tradition of pottery making still thriving to date. The most famous landmark to see in this quaint town is the 142-step monumental Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte that was built from 1608 in the old part of the town. Each step is adorned with various hand-decorated tiles with each showing different styles/features. Climb the staircase with the proud locals; stop intermittently to catch your breath while admiring the beauty of its surroundings. One caveat -- Be careful while taking pictures in the middle of this beautiful staircase. One misstep can tumble you down to disaster. Next stop -- Vizzini and Monterosso Almo
