The more I learned to love and accept myself, the less I could remain a Christian - Myndee Mack
Today I spoke with Myndee Mack, who placed her faith in Christ as a young child and pursued her relationship with Yahweh for decades, but fully deconverted as an adult as she examined the truth claims of Christianity.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Strongly relying on her friendship with Jesus to get through hard times as a child.
• Observing poverty being demonized by the church she attended.
• Feeling that her family was not seeing god's blessings, and being heartbroken that she could not sense god helping her and her family.
• Taking the feeling of rejection from god very personally and responding with disassociation and depression.
• Never being able to truly rest in her "salvation" for fear of backsliding.
• Not having any freedom to ask critical questions or express concerns about theology without facing condescending responses and people questioning her faith.
• Admitting to herself that the Yahweh character as a loving father did not make sense anymore.
• Being told that you will be completely happy in heaven even as your unbelieving loved ones are burning in hell.
• Admitting that when people believe monstrous things long enough, they turn themselves into a monster.
• Starting to develop much more self-awareness and self-love and acknowledging that those dynamics make it ultimately impossible to remain in the Christian worldview.
• Finally experiencing true peace for the first time, after escaping Christianity, and realizing that peace begins inside, with each of us.
• Finding that community and connections post-deconversion are much more authentic.
Thanks to Myndee for sharing her story and insights!
