Sprinter Van - Loss of Power - Bad Turbo Actuator 3.0 Mercedes Diesel 2007-2009

OVERVIEW
2007-2009 Sprinter Van 3.0 Turbo Diesel with Mercedes NCV3 OM642 6-cylinder

This engine is also used in other Mercedes, Jeeps, and Dodges

The turbo actuator adjusts the boost level on variable geometry turbos
SYMPTOMS
Usually self diagnosable:
Poor acceleration
Intermittent loss of power
Persistent loss of power
Limp mode
Symptoms temporarily go away after turning vehicle off and back on

People may experience:
Check engine light (I did not)
Clogged Diesel Exhaust Filter DEF if left untreated (Mine clogged while limping home)

Related Conditions:
Turbo boost leak
Bad turbocharger
Wiring issue
TREATMENTS
Replace actuator
Replace turbo
The replacement actuator took about a week for delivery. An attempt to hold the vanes in place with a zip tie proved unsuccessful as the van stayed in limp mode

SPECIALISTS

Mercedes dealer:
“Replace turbo and wire harness connector - $5000” 🤣

Non-Dealer Sprinter Specialist:
“Let’s replace the boost plumbing lines”
“Let’s reprogram the computer to stay out of limp mode” 🤦‍♂️ (I actually did this so your vehicle’s symptoms may vary)
